Expert summary

The First World War is also called ‘World War I’, the ‘Great War’, and the ‘War to End All Wars’. It was the first global war and it took place mainly in Europe. Over 40 million people were killed, about 20 million civilians. More than 60 million European soldiers had been mobilized. It was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, by Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian Serb citizen, that triggered the war. The retaliation of Austria-Hungary against the Kingdom of Serbia set off a chain reaction of war declarations. In a month most of Europe was locked in a mortal combat. The strong economic and military competition between Britain and Germany was also a major cause.
